One of today’s favorite pastimes for millions of online gamblers is online poker. In a standard game of Texas Hold ‘em, you are seated alongside the other players at the poker table. Two cards are dealt to each player, face down, so all the players see nothing except their own cards. After each player checks out his cards, the first betting round commences.
The player that is dealt the first cards (the first one on the left of the “Button”, or the “Dealer”, in casual games among friends) is the “Small Blind”, and the player on his left is the “Big Blind”. The player on the left of the Big Blind gets to place the first bet, and the turn is handed clockwise until the Big Blind gets to call, raise or check. After this initial round of betting, the first three community cards are turned face-up. This is called the “flop”, and the subsequent round is called the “post flop” betting (as opposed to the earlier “pre-flop”). This one, unlike the first betting round, starts with the Small Blind, and the last person to bet is the Button.
Once the second betting round is over, another community card is turned face-up on the table. This is called the Turn. This action is followed by yet another betting round, once again starting with the Small Blind. Once this one is over, the fifth and final card community card is turned face-up, and a final betting round ensues.
The poker hands you can make are the best standard five card poker hands, and you can combine any of the five community cards with your two to make the best one. This is all there is to learning Texas Hold ‘em, and everything else that you should know comes from practice alone.
